2021.10.25 14:50 Musashi_5 Youtube, Reddit, Twitter, etc. do not help you become more knowledgeable or intelligent
I've seen this notion around the Internet, including this sub, that keeping Reddit and Youtube accounts for educational purposes is possible. That you can use these sites as tools for further knowledge rather than an entertainment distraction.
I put forth that most people need to move away from the idea that Reddit, Youtube, Twitter, etc. make you more intelligent.
This is essentially the same idea that many people had in the late 90's and throughout the 2000's, that the Internet would make people smarter and more intelligent as we were able to access the entire collective knowledge of humanity in one place.
Yet research has shown that this did not turn out to be the case.
These sites may help you acquire a slightly broader general knowledge with the amount of information Youtube and Reddit contain - you will learn something about the American Revolution if you watch a 30-minute video of it - but the information you gather is surface level. It's interesting as you're learning, but the knowledge very quickly leaves you and this has been shown in research multiple times.
Studies have proven that we retain information much better from physical books than we do learning the same information from videos, online articles, or even the same books on a screen/Kindle. Even the studies that came out in the late 2000's - seemingly a lifetime ago when Google had only recently bought Youtube and Reddit was still in its infancy - show this.
We don't read online information the same way we do books. We skim, trying to find the "meat" of the information rather than reading the whole article/book/what have you. And videos are not exempt from this. I have friends who can't even sit and watch a 15-minute Youtube video without skipping around to the main part of the video.
How is this a recipe for increased knowledge? These sites, and many others like them, are purposefully designed to be shallow and distracting.
No one has specialized knowledge anymore because no one can sit down and learn effectively anymore. This includes myself because I'm here on Reddit with the rest of you. And it's not the fault of the average citizen. Our society rewards having broad knowledge, especially in the workplace as companies pay as little as possible for an employee to do as much as possible. And I'm not even necessarily blaming the companies because why wouldn't they want to get the most bang for their buck? The Internet has simply driven us to this point, as more information becomes more readily available the expectation that we should know as much as possible rises.
Except, it's a fallacy. The Internet has not provided increased intelligence or a utopian society. It has divided us, reduced our critical thinking ability, forced us to consider complex topics in shallow ways, and become unable to, ironically, accept the differences in each other.
Youtube and Reddit can be useful for specific things; specific questions to communities, tutorials on various tasks, like car and computer repair, or music recommendations. But we should not be using these sites as our main resource or even secondary resource for knowledge.
Read freaking books. Pick a topic, read as many physical books as you can on the topic, and you will be amazed how much you come to know and retain about the topic.
I would love to have a discussion with anyone who feels the opposite.

2021.10.25 14:50 leftysrule200 #cpsupport How to get RMA status?
I'm just curious if anyone has suggestions for how to get a status on an RMA. I sent my faulty GPU back weeks ago and just can't get an update at all.
I called support last week and sat on hold for hours without talking to anyone. Finally today I call again. I selected the options to check on a status for an RMA. After about an hour I finally got an agent who asked me for my customer number. Then he said he would transfer me to the RMA department and I was back on hold. Gave up after another 30 minutes.
I attempted to use the email option. But it seems emails are ignored as well. I never get anything from that approach, except a request to take a survey and rate their support.

2021.10.25 14:50 oh_fuck_ya_bud Finally, some progress! I lost 3 pounds the healthy way!
SW 201lbs, CW 198lbs, GW 180lbs, H 6’0, W 38
So it’s been 5 weeks since I started going to the gym and 1 week since I learned about the importance of protein. I’ve replaced any snack craving I have with one of my yummy chocolate protein shakes and do my best to have at least 60 grams a day (200 is what I was told I need to get up to).
I replaced all my unhealthy habits with healthy habits and finally, I noticed a difference on the scale.
I was so disappointed in how I let myself go, get the belly I did and reality kicked in when the scale started with a “2”. Now it’s back down to starting with a “1” and I feel great. My goal is to be able to fit into my size 34 jeans again. That’s probably a bit too wishful thinking though.

2021.10.25 14:50 BGGGReddit Here's an option for Ventilation Fan W/o cutting roof
I mostly lurk here, but I recently got a window fan vent as an option for some more ventilation w/o putting in a roof van.
In warmer seasons, I just leave windows cracked open fore and aft, sometimes using a small fan pointed at a window, which works fine. But in winter, it is always a struggle between ventilation and heat loss. So, I've been looking for another cool weather solution that doesn't involve the normal roof fan. ( My van has sweet poptop with a nice headliner that I didn't want to cut into, and I didn't want to mess with my roof storage).
I recently found (while looking for something else) a $12 solution, a window vent fan. So far it works great. USB powered; less than .5amp draw; relatively quiet, esp at low power. Time will tell whether the fan motors/push button switch hold up. (If they do shit the bed, I like the shroud enough that I'll just pop it open and swap in some cheapie PC fans. I leave a usb cord in it to avoid wear and tear on the usb plug and connectors. )
Anyway, search for "MYUOOT AA469" to find the fan.

2021.10.25 14:50 Westcoastdude_998 What are some good gyms in West Hollywood?
Hey all! I'm living in West Hollywood around the Fairfax/The Grove area, and could use some gym recommendations. Looking for a place with partial open air that is Covid safe, along with quality weights and machines. Ideally would like to keep the monthly membership under $100 per month, but I'm flexible.
Also, I recently moved to Los Angeles and I'm looking to meet more people in my area. It would be a plus if a gym offers group classes, or at least generally has an outgoing, social, and chill environment. Any good recommendations? Thanks in advance!

2021.10.25 14:50 optimussquared Eating hurts
I’m coming up on a week of IF. 2 days out the 5 I fasted for 20 hours versus 16, but you get the point - it’s 18:6 that I’m doing. What happens is that my stomach starts hurting - not hunger pains, but like, my stomach is contracting. And then when I finally eat, it feels really uncomfortable, almost painful, and I usually can’t finish my food. Am I breaking my fast wrong or something?
